After a welcome by Lee Williams, a very short meeting (15 minutes) was chaired by Phil Drew before the socialising got underway. Great hospitality was enjoyed from a range of Thwaites beers. Their new seasonal ale, Golden Wunder, was on the bar and despite its strap line, an Oktoberfest Ale, was not a lager at all! Instead a very enjoyable light beer with honey overtones.

Brewery tours were held for those who had expressed interest, with two groups donning the very fetching luminous jackets. Potato pie and peas were offered towards the end of the evening.

Britain's pubs are under severe and sustained pressure. CAMRA predicts that up to 7,500 pubs could be lost by the end of 2012. Pubs play a vital role in the social life of communities up and down the country - and are an essential part of promoting a more responsible drinking culture. It is time to stand up for a Great British tradition and save the pub.
